The Ins And Outs Of Food Dehydrator Trays Review

A food dehydrator is a kitchen appliance used to remove the moisture from food, aiding in its preservation and increasing shelf life. Food is placed on the food dehydrator trays and the dehydrator uses a combination of heat and air flow to remove water from the food.

By removing water from the food you reduce bacteria which causes it to spoil. To do this successfully the application of a constant temperature of around 140 degrees Fahrenheit and adequate air flow is important.

A food dehydrator consists of a heating element, a fan and air vents all which work together to remove the moisture from the food. It also has food dehydration trays to place the food on. The heating element warms the food and causes its moisture to be released. This moisture is then converted into warm air which the fan then blows out through the air vents. This process normally continues for hours and removes around fifteen to twenty percent of the foods water content.

These days’ solar dryers are available and there make use of solar energy to create the flow of warm air through the food dehydrator trays.

When purchasing your food dehydrator it is best to go for metal of high grade plastic as anything made out of wood is a fire hazard and is also difficult to clean. It is also wise to get one that has enclosed heating elements and an enclosed thermostat. Four to ten open mesh food dehydrator trays should be enough and make sure that they are made of sturdy, lightweight plastic for easy cleaning. A timer is handy to have on your dehydrator as the time it takes to fully dehydrate food may run into the night and a timer would ensure that the machine is turned off when it is done and will prevent scorching. Some types of dehydrators have outside walls which the food dehydrating trays can slip in and out. You also get some with stackable trays and ones which allow you to purchase additional trays if needed.

There are two different types of designs for food dehydrators, one has a horizontal air flow and one has a vertical air flow. In the case of the horizontal flow, the heating element and the fan are located on one side of the unit. This ensures that you don’t get mixing of the flavors if you are drying various types of food at once. It also ensures that all the food dehydrator trays receive equal effect from the heat and that the juices from the foods do not drip onto the heating element.

The vertical models have the heating element and fan located at the either the base or the top of the unit. This can lead to mixing of flavors can be mixed and if the elements are at the bottom they can get dripped on. The vertical models with the fan at the top to prevent the heating element from getting damaged by juices dripping onto it but the downfall is that it does not offer a very even heat distribution as heat generally rises.

It is important to keep your food dehydrator trays clean and cleaning them thoroughly after each use to prevent sticky buildups and unhygienic food.
